Random belated thoughts about the Steelers pre-season loss in Philly

Sadly, the Steeler Face was too distracted with work to post this any sooner.  At any rate, here are some   notes following the Steelers' 23-24 pre-season opening loss in Philly:

Mike Adams, rookie offensive tackle may not be able to block, but he can at least recover fumbles after he lets his QB get sacked.  He did that twice in first quarter.  For the game, Pittsburgh QBs were sacked 7 freaking times for minus 57.  Why is it not possible for the Steelers to put a line (even a dotted one) around their franchise quarterback?

An opposing player left his feet, led with the helmet, hit a Steelers QB and was actually flagged.  (All footage of this has been confiscated by the NFL and destroyed.  The League Commissioner denies that any hit against a Steeler QB could possibly be illegal, or even penalized).

Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer looked fairly solid in limited action.  Dwyer's 33-yard scamper set up the Steelers first touchdown of the game and put Pittsburgh up 10-0 in the first quarter.  The Steelers were up 13-0 at halftime and 20-14 in the second half . . . before losing 23-24 on a late field goal.

Byron Leftwich wasn't injured . . .  oh wait, that usually happens during the last pre-season game.

For whatever it is worth, Big Ben was effective on the first (and his only) drive of the game, completing 7 of 8 passes for 49 yards, and using his feet to break tackles and make plays on third down.  Of course, the two sacks on that drive were costly as Pittsburgh had to settle for a 46-yard Shawn Suisham field goal.

Bottom line --  there were too many things that looked like last year (stalled drives near the goal line resulting in 3 points rather than 7, too many quarterback sacks, and too many leads lost).  Not an inspiring start to the 2012 season (even if it is pre-season).
