The recent announcement of Troy Polamalu's retirement has me reminiscing this morning, and so I thought I'd share this "throw-back" post from 2012 . . .

"Steeler Face Celebrates Polamalu Year"

From 1/19/12

The Steeler Face celebrates
his 43rd birthday today, and thus welcomes his "Polamalu year." As
noted in the Steeler fan's guide to the galaxy, the answer to life, the
universe and everything is 43. Therefore, I expect this to be an
enlightening year personally, professionally and recreationally. In the
meantime, I am reminiscing about a birthday in the recent past in which
I received, perhaps, my favorite birthday present ever:

That's
right, a Polamalu jersey. I received this Polamalu replica home jersey
on January 19, 2009, which happened to be my 40th birthday. Of course,
I could have cared less about how old I was that day because I was
still basking in the afterglow of what transpired the day before.

The
Steelers had defeated the Baltimore Haters 23-14 on January 18, 2009 in
the AFC Championship game and were on their way to Super Bowl XLIII and
what would become their NFL record 6th Super Bowl championship. (Not
to put to fine a point on it, but that is Super Bowl, roman numeral
"43").

What was special about this day,
however, was the fact that Troy Polamalu's spectacular interception
return for a touchdown with about 4 minutes to go in the game sealed the
Steelers win. I stayed up late that night watching (and re-watching)
game highlights--and then woke up the next morning to be presented a
birthday gift from my wife and two sons--a Troy Polamalu jersey. There
couldn't have been a better gift that day except of course for my
beautiful family with which the Good Lord has blessed me.Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-16067420992410333812014-01-04T21:15:00.001-08:002014-01-05T08:48:49.774-08:00O for Ohio: Steelers miss playoffs again

"I went back to Ohio

but my Steelers were gone

no division title

there was no playoffs

Super Bowls had disappeared

and some favorite players

The Steelers had been pulled down

reduced to mere bystanders

A, O it's O for Ohio . . ."

Maybe it's me? The Steeler Face has lived in Ohio during five football seasons--and in none of those have the Steelers made the playoffs. From 1998-2000 the Steeler Face resided in Athens, Ohio and the Steelers finished 7-9, 6-10 and 9-7 respectively--and sat out the postseason each time. The Steeler Face returned to Ohio (this time, Cincinnati) in 2012 and the Steelers have finished 8-8 the past two years and have missed out on the playoffs for consecutive years for the first time . . . since 1998-2000.

"So I went back to Ohio

but my Steelers were gone

I watched on the TV

but they were not on

I was stunned and amazed

as playoff memories

just swirled past me

here in Cincinnati

Oh, no, I'm still O for Ohio . . ."

Nonetheless, the Steeler Face is finding it hard not to be optimistic about the near future after watching the Steelers win 6 of their last 8 games to close out the 2013 season, after a horrendous 2-6 start. This team never quit fighting and somehow found a way to make it interesting, and with two weeks to go, Pittsburgh needed 8 different things to happen to sneak into the playoffs and 7.99 of those things did. Too bad that it was too little too late.

"I went back to Ohio

but my Steeler Nation pride

had been paved down the middle

by an NFL that had no pride

Bengals in Ohio

replacing Steelers in playoffs

but 'We-dey' fills the air

from Athens to Cincinnati Ohio

I said, A, O, I'm O for Ohio . . ."

The only thing that didn't go the Steelers way was Kansas City's 24-27 loss in San Diego. Yeah, we could grumble about the illegal formation on KC's missed FG at the end of regulation, or the miss itself, or the touchdown that was taken away by a whistle that was never blown in OT--but the blame lies entirely in Pittsburgh. The Steelers simply put themselves in too big a hole to climb out of despite the valiant effort at the end. If the Steelers are going to dwell on anything it should be the Dolphins game--and not Antonio Brown's toe stepping out of bounds--but the 34 points the Steeler D allowed to a Miami team playing in the snow and wind at Heinz Field--a Miami team that would only score 7 points in its last two games of the season against the Bluff-alo Bills and N.Y. Jets. That Dolphins game was a killer.

Still, Steeler Nation should be proud of the way this team fought back, especially after the Miami game that left Pittsburgh with a 5-8 record and almost no hope. The cacophony of calls for Tomlin's firing, Big Ben being traded and Haley's public execution have thankfully gone away. Let's face it--Tomlin has never had a losing season, neither has Big Ben, and the no-huddle offense worked beautifully in the second half of the season.

Big Ben completed 28 touchdowns against 14 interceptions and passed for 4,261 yards, Le'Veon Bell rushed for 860 yards (breaking Franco Harris' rookie record for the Steelers) and 8 touchdowns, Jericho Cotchery caught 10 touchdown passes and Antonio Brown (along with Troy Polamalu) made the Pro Bowl.

The big question marks for the Steelers in 2014 are all on defense:

-- Will Troy Polamalu be back? Yes, he still has a year left on his contract, but it is for $10 million. Troy is a perennial pro-bowler and had an amazing comeback this year. He still has it. I hope the Steelers find a way to keep him--whether it is by extending his contract, asking him to restructure his contract, or just paying him the damn money. The Rooney's would do well to remember what happened after they prematurely gave up on Rod Woodson and let the future Hall of Famer depart via free agency in 1997--Rod picking off three passes in a single game as a member of the San Francisco 49ers . . . Rod winning a Super Bowl as a member of the Baltimore Ravens . . . or playing in another Super Bowl as a member of the Oakland Raiders. Ugh.

-- Will Ike Taylor, Lamar Woodley, Brett Keisel or anyone else on defense be back? Who cares -- keep Troy.

-- Will Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau return as defensive coordinator? Who cares -- keep Troy.

-- Will the Steelers rebuild the defense via the draft? They should, and more importantly, they should keep Troy.

Other off-season story lines to follow:

-- Will Jerome Bettis make the Hall of Fame? He should -- it is more than about damn time.

-- What is the future of the The Steeler Face? I'm sorry that I had a hard time keeping up with the blog in 2013. The Steeler Face will take time to consider how to reshape the effort in 2014.

Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-79555882791799484872013-12-28T08:59:00.003-08:002013-12-29T04:42:17.192-08:00"Let's just f@cking play . . . ": Steelers STILL alive in NFL playoff scenario
The fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers (who started 0-4 and 2-6) can even be mentioned in the same sentence as "playoff scenario" in the final week of the NFL regular season is remarkable. Despite injuries, bad play calling, ineffective playmaking and the ever present Steeler-hating-officiating, this team has still managed to fight its way back by winning 5 of its last 7 games. Should we expect the Steelers to make the playoffs tomorrow afternoon? Of course not. Let's shed any such notion of "expectation" and just get the win against the Cleveland Brownie-Elves and celebrate another season of Steeler football--playoffs or not.

That said--go Bengals, go Jets and go Chiefs...because (in addition to a win against Cleveland) the Steelers need the Ravens, Dolphins and Chargers to all lose tomorrow if they are going to miraculously claim the AFC's last remaining playoff spot as the 6th-seeded Wild Card. What Steeler fan can resist a little scoreboard watching if Pittsburgh still has a shot (no matter how faint) to make the playoffs? All I'm saying is -- do it without any "expectation" that they'll get in. Expectations suck -- so don't have any.

Instead, let's savor what was the most satisfying win of an otherwise frustrating season -- the Steelers' 38-31 victory at Green Bay last week.

There were good signs about this one even before kick-off -- Heather of Steeler Nation's Michigan Bureau reported seeing a Steeler-themed plane in Detroit while en route on holiday travel, as well as hearing "Renegade" upon arrival.

At halftime the Steelers trailed 10-14, but the second half was nothing short of electrifying. It all began in the third quarter with the Steelers set to punt on 4th and 2 from their own 43 when special teams coach Danny Smith made Pittsburgh's best play call of the year -- a fake punt. Matt McBriar took the snap, scrambled right, and had the presence to hold back with two oncoming rushers breathing down his neck before passing 17 yards to David Paulson. A personal foul penalty tacked on another 15 yards and the Steelers had a first down at the Packers 13. On the very next play, Ben Roethlisberger scrambled for 13 yards and his first rushing touchdown since 2010 to put Pittsburgh ahead 17-14. The Green Bay Packers had officially been served.

The Steelers could have taken control of the game on the Packers next possession when on third-and-6 Pittsburgh sacked Matt Flynn. However, offsetting fouls (holding against Green Bay and illegal hands to the face against Pittsburgh) gave the Packers a do-over, which they converted. Green Bay moved the ball further and a punt pinned the Steelers deep at their own 2-yard line. Le'Veon Bell fumbled and now the Packers were set up for a gift touchdown.

However, the Steeler defense made its best stand of the year -- in years, in fact -- by pushing Green Bay back and forcing a 23-yard field goal attempt that was BLOCKED by Cameron Heyward and recovered by Ryan Clark, who established possession, made a "football" move, lateraled the ball to a teammate who couldn't catch it, before it was knocked out of bounds by Ziggy Hood. Inexplicably, Steeler-hating-officiating awarded possession of the ball to Green Bay and Coach Mike Tomlin was not allowed to challenge. Of course, Green Bay scored on the next play and it was 21-17 Packers. The momentum swing could have been soul crushing. Green Bay and the NFL's Steeler-hating-officiating had officially served the Steelers back. So now, it was on.

Another sign: Memories of January 15, 2006.

The morning of the Steelers/Packers game I happened to watch an episode of NFL's Greatest Games that featured the Steelers 21-18 playoff win against the Colts in 2006. The ridiculously-awful call that went against Pittsburgh in Green Bay immediately reminded me of another ridiculously-awful call that went against Pittsburgh seven years ago during that playoff game at Indianapolis when a Troy Polamalu interception was wrongly overruled by NFL Steeler-hating-officiating. While the play was "under review" Bill Cowher in his finest moment as Steelers Coach took his defense aside (assuming that--despite the ruling on the field, ample videographic evidence confirming the same, logic, reason, fairness, application of basic NFL rules, and the facts--the call was going to go against Pittsburgh anyway) and delivered this message:

"Let's just f@cking play, no matter what happens, regardless of what happens, we move on and we play."

That message came to mind as the Steeler Face suddenly channeled his inner-Joey Porter from 2006 on the next Steeler possession as Bell ran for 25 yard and leaped a Packer defender in the process before Big Ben threw an 11-yard TD strike to Matt Spaeth (remember him) to put the Steelers back on top 24-21. "CHEAT THAT!" -- came the echo of Joey Porter.

On Green Bay's next possession, Cortez Allen intercepted Matt Flynn and ran 40-yards for the pick-six to move Pittsburgh's lead to 31-21 late in the third quarter.

"CHEAT THAT! CHEAT THAT!"

If memory serves (and it doesn't clearly) the jar of liquor-soaked cherries used to cap off each Steeler score had been exhausted somewhere around half-time. The Steeler Face (infused with the spirit of Joey Porter) had improvised by topping off shots of Stoli vodka with the remaining cherry juice (assuming the liquor used to soak the cherries was the same). Mrs. Steeler Face later informed me that the last batch of cherries were soaked with Makers Mark, meaning I had now slammed at least three toxic mixes of cherry juice infused with bourbon, topped with vodka. Liquid courage said "f@ck it" -- the 21-point Steelers third quarter was worth it.

Green Bay tied the game at 31-31 in the fourth quarter, but I kept in mind Cowher's words, and kept the faith. With three minutes to go in the game the Packers were backed-up at their own 5-yard line on 3rd-and-13. Flynn was scrambling for a first down when Troy Polamalu FORCED A FUMBLE that was recovered by Brett Keisel. Pittsburgh took possession at the Packers' 17 and with 1:25 left, Bell scored the go-ahead TD for a 38-31 Steelers' lead. Bell finished the day with 26 carries, 124 yard rushing and 2 TDs.

Enjoy this one Steeler Nation -- and remember, have no expectations about making the playoffs. After an 0-4 and 2-6 start this season was over--dead in the water--over. So, as far as I'm concerned, this week is "free football". The Steelers still have something to play for in its last game -- awesome.

Another sign?

While driving my sons back from play rehearsal last night we heard "Renegade: on the radio . . . and cranked it . . . here we go Steelers, here we go!

Santa -- thank you for last weekend -- now can we have the Steelers win again while the Ravens, Dolphins and Chargers all lose?
After last week's heart-wrenching loss to the Miami Dolphins, the Steeler Face promised to analyze the reasons for Pittsburgh's struggles this year, but I didn't. As the week wore on it seemed the reasons were obvious enough, and quite frankly, I lost heart. And then, the Cincinnati Bungles--the gift that keeps on giving--emerged at Heinz Field before I had found the time to type a single word. All week, as a resident of Cincinnati, all I heard were Bengals fans that wanted to trash talk when they spotted me in Steeler-wear. And, I have learned that exactly two words are sure fire Bengals fan repellant: "Super Bowl." As soon as you say those two words -- suddenly, they don't want to talk anymore.

So what do you want for Christmas? Here is the Steeler Face's list:

-- The Ravens to lose to the Lions and Patriots, or the Lions and Bengals, or the Patriots and Bengals.

-- The Steelers to beat the Packers and Browns.

-- The Jets to beat the Browns and Dolphins.

-- The Dolphins to lose to the Bills and Jets.

-- The Chargers to lose to the Raiders, or Chiefs.

If all of that happens--the Steelers will be in the playoffs. If not, then what we've come to expect since September will happen... the Steelers won't.Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-46988638198108699992013-12-08T19:15:00.001-08:002013-12-09T03:40:00.641-08:00Another disappointing loss should hasten soul searching for SteelersIt was December, it was snowing, it was Heinz Field, it was Pittsburgh, and the Steelers were playing for their playoff lives against the visiting warm-weather Dolphins. Steeler Nation had great expectations at kick-off, but were left absolutely disappointed by the game's end as Miami won 34-28.

No divine intervention this season

In a cruel final twist, Pittsburgh briefly appeared to pull off a miracle win on the game's final play with a series of lateral passes and Antonio Brown scampering for the end zone. Alas, it was revealed that he barely stepped out of bounds before reaching the end zone--leaving the Steelers out of reach of even divine intervention.

Besides the game's final play, there were plenty of remarkable performances by Pittsburgh in this one. Big Ben surpassed Terry Bradshaw for most touchdown passes all-time by a Steeler QB. He made (yet another) valiant effort throwing for 3 TDs (and now has 11 touchdown passes against 0 interceptions in the last 4 games). Troy Polamalu (remember him) had a pick-6, and made a notable effort to run back a missed field goal as time expired at the end of the first half.

There were also plenty of frustrations -- dropped passes and missed tackles were chief among them.

. . . and neither should you be

However, at 5-8, Steeler Nation (from top to bottom) needs to do some deep soul searching. Where did it all start to go wrong? How did we get here? How do we change this?

The Steeler Face will break it down later this week . . .

This image just about says it all. The Steelers (5-7) are Rick Deckard in this scene from Blade Runner. They're going to fall unless one (or some) of their opponents bail them out. Pittsburgh must win at home against the Dolphins (6-6) and watch the scoreboard for the following games:

Vikings (3-8-1) vs. Ravens (6-6): Please let the Vikings pull off this upset.

Colts (8-4) vs. Bengals (8-4): Yes, it i still a long shot for the Steelers to win the AFC North, but WTH, it is not over yet, and this "is" the Bungles we're talking about. Go Colts.

And while we're at it . . . let's thin the herd of 5-7 teams around the Steelers: go Broncos vs. Titans (5-7); go Raiders vs. Jets (5-7); and go Giants vs. Chargers (5-7).

I'm not mad that the NFL scheduled the Steelers for two consecutive road games within 4 days; I'm not mad that Emmanuel Sanders dropped a game-tying 2 point conversion attempt; I'm not even mad that the pass was thrown to him; I'm not mad that Le'Veon Bell had a touchdown taken away because a Raven defender knocked his head off; I'm not even mad that no flag was thrown on the play even when it would certainly have been thrown against a Steeler if the situation was reversed; I'm not mad that Shaun Suisham blew a field goal try; and I'm not even mad that ALL of the national coverage is focusing on whether or not Coach Tomlin tried to interfere with Baltimore's receiver trying to run back a kick-off.

What pisses me off is that Steeler Nation had to sit through more ineffective play calling (Bell to the left, Bell to the right, and Bell up the middle on 3rd and stupid--was literally the first three play calls on the night from Todd Haley) . . . BEFORE we go to the no-huddle (which IS effective).

Thanksgiving horrors past:

1998: Steelers lose 16-19 in OT because Phil Luckett blew the coin-toss.

1983: Steelers lose 3-45 to the Lions. Cliff Stoudt.
Steelers, Ravens, Thanksgiving, playoff implications . . .The Steelers and Ravens have each been served, so now it is on . . . Thanksgiving night, national television. The Steelers and Ravens are both 5-6 and are fighting for their playoff lives. The Ravens are the defending Super Bowl champions--suffering a hangover, while the Steelers didn't make the playoffs last year, started 2-6 this year, but have reeled off 3 straight wins to make themselves relevant again in the 2013-14 NFL season. That is . . . IT'S ON!
STEELERS DUMP BROWNS 27-11The Cleveland Brownie Elves are the gift that keeps on giving . . . playing their first meaningful game against the hated Pittsburgh Steelers . . . in . . . who knows how many years (and at home no less), they offered little resistance to the resurgent Steelers, who claimed their third win in a row, 27-11. Pittsburgh, who seemed irrelevant after an 0-4 and 2-6 start to the season, have now won 5 of their last 7 to improve to 5-6. The 'mistake-on-the-lake' has now dropped 5 of 6 to fall to 4-7.

Big Ben is now 16-1 against the hapless Brownie Elves, who go through QBs like most people use toilet paper -- one and done. Roethlisberger completed 22 of 34 passes for 2 TDs and zero interceptions. Moreover, he wasn't sacked . . . at all . . . (nice job o-line)!

The Steeler D was the star of this game with 5 sacks, 3 fumble recovers and 21-yard interception return for a touchdown by William Gay.

Steelers playoff picture (seriously) . . .

In the AFC North, the Cincinnati Bungles (who were idle today) remain in first place with a 7-4 record (2-2 in the division). Pittsburgh now has sole possession of second place with a 5-6 mark (2-1 in the division). Next week's opponent, the Baltimore Haters are in third at 5-6 (2-2 against the division), and the Cleveland Brownie Elves are bringing up the rear at 4-7 (2-3 against the AFC North).

In the battle for the 2nd AFC Wild Card: the Steelers, Ravens, Jets, Dolphins, Chargers, and Titans are all tied with 5-6 records.

Tomorrow Never Knows* . . . but it is now "on" for Thanksgiving night in Baltimore when the Steelers take on the Ravens. Whoever comes up short in this one will likely have seen their playoff hopes take a mortal blow, while the winner will be in position to challenge the Bungles for the AFC North title.

It is on and the Steeler anxiety this week -- "goes to 11" . . .

"Tweak" this . . .

Big Ben, who has 6 TDs against 0 INTs in the past two games, and 19 touchdowns against 10 interceptions for the year, also has this to be proud of . . .

2004-present (10 seasons)
92-45 regular season record
10-4 playoff record
102-49 total record as a starter
3 AFC championships in 4 appearances
2 Super Bowl championships in 3 appearances

*The Steeler Face laid down a Beatles inspired soundtrack for this game (including "Getting Better" and "What Goes On") along with Paul McCartney's "Coming Up" and John Lennon's "Watching the Wheels" in honor of his good friend Pat Johnston who could not watch today's action (major FAIL by your travel agent). Of course, the Steeler Face sprinkled in a little AC/DC's "Hell's Bells." . . and a whole lot of RENEGADE!

Don't look now, but the Pittsburgh Steelers are
once again "relevant" in the 2013-14 NFL season after a thrilling 37-27
upset victory at home over the Detroit Lions.

Trailing 23-27, Big Ben led another memorable
fourth quarter comeback by driving the Steelers 97 yards on 16 plays over 8
minutes, capped-off by a 1-yard TD pass with 4:46 remaining for a 30-27
lead. Roethlisberger was magnificent on
the day (while operating the ‘no huddle’ offense—ahem, critics), completing 29 of 45 passes for 367 yards, 4 touchdowns
and zero interceptions. More amazing
than that – Roethlisberger was only sacked once
on the day (getting something most QBs know as “pass protection”).

The win was Pittsburgh's fourth in the last six
weeks and improved their record to 4-6, which put them in a three-way tie with
the Baltimore Haters and Cleveland Brownie Elves for second place in the four-team
AFC North behind the Cincinnati Bungles (7-4).
Seriously – the Steelers are involved in the playoff picture (albeit a
murky one). While either the Kansas City
Chefs (9-1) or Denver Mannings (9-1) will claim the first Wild Card – eight
others are in a log jam for the second spot, as the Jets and Dolphins are 5-5;
followed by Steelers, Browns, Ravens, Chargers and Raiders, who are 4-6; and the
Bills (4-7).

Whether or not the Steelers remain relevant will
depend on what happens in their next two games, which are both on the road. On
Sunday, Pittsburgh goes to Cleveland and just four days later, they travel to
Baltimore for a contest on Thanksgiving night (thank you NFL scheduling--not).
The Steelers will likely need to win both of these contests to stay in
the playoff picture.

That said, Steeler Nation shouldn’t get too far
ahead of itself—and just savor the flavor of this week’s win.

The game was full of twists and turns, as Pittsburgh
jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of TD passes from Big
Ben to Antonio Brown for 34 and 47 yards respectively, and then quickly
squandered it. Brown finished the game
with 7 catches for 147 yards and 2 TDs.

The
second f@cking quarter!

After Big Ben staked Pittsburgh to a 14-0 advantage,
the Steeler secondary developed an acute case of the “f@ck-its” and quit playing
defense for the entire second quarter. Detroit
outscored the Steelers 27-6 in the frame to claim a 27-20 lead at
halftime. Lions QB Matt Stafford racked
up 267 yards in the second quarter and 327 by halftime. Detroit’s Calvin Johnson had 179 yards and 2
TDs, the f-bombs were falling faster than the raindrops, and Steeler Nation was
emptying bottles of Iron City faster than fans were heading for shelter at
Heinz Field from the rain (and f-bombs).

Third
quarter frustration . . .

The Steelers made something called an “adjustment” on
defense at halftime and shut Detroit out during the second half. However, Steeler Nation was getting the sense
that it would be for not if the offense couldn’t score a touchdown after
settling for field goals on three consecutive scoring drives. In the third quarter, Pittsburgh had the
ball--1st and goal at the half-yard line—and couldn’t find the end
zone, and trailed Detroit 23-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fourth
quarter comeback

The Lions' fatal mistake was a failed fake 27-yard field
goal that was stopped near the goal line in the fourth quarter. Rather, than extending their lead to 7
points, Detroit gave Pittsburgh new life.
The Steelers took possession backed up on their 3-yard line, but Big Ben
led the Steelers on a 97 yard march that took over 8 minutes to claim a 30-27
lead with 4:46 remaining in the game.

RENEGADE!

Then, something totally amazing happened--Pittsburgh’s secondary did something that
wasn’t painful to watch! Will Allen
intercepted a Matt Stafford pass on the Lions next possession just after Heinz
Field fired the crowd up with a blaring rendition of “Renegade” (sorry Pat
Johnston). Five plays later Big Ben
connected with Jericho Cotchery for a game clinching 20-yard TD pass and a 37-27
lead.

Although, Pat Johnston of the Michigan Bureau of
Steeler Nation was hoping to retire “Renegade” on the basis of its recent lack
of effectiveness – its back now! On the
upside, the Steeler Face, will set aside his penchant for an AC/DC game
soundtrack—as this one was underscored by “Shoot to Thrill,” “Hell’s Bells,”
“Dirty Deeds” and “Thunderstruck.”

The Steeler defense recorded 2 sacks and 2 fumble

"This is complete f@cking bullshit. Seriously?!" said the Steeler Face while throwing back an uncharacteristic third Iron City after the Steelers 23-10 win at home against the Buffalo Bills. "Can't I just enjoy this little blip of happiness in this f@ck-all season? Really? What's wrong with you people?" he added.

Nonetheless, his post-game tone, and lack of game posts the past two weeks has continued to fan speculation that he is tired of being a Steeler fan, and may wish to follow the Gotham City Rogues franchise.

The Steeler Face retorted: "That's not even a real franchise you f@cktards!"

However, the Steeler Face has not sported a Steeler jersey the past four weeks and has been posting pictures on social media of himself in a Gotham City Rogues t-shirt.

"The Steelers are 3-1 when I wear that shirt this year, and 0-5 otherwise, and d@mnit! Why I am trying to explain this to you? You're the same morons that think Big Ben is going to be traded"

Trade rumors also swirled today around Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger after winning his 100th game for Pittsburgh. Reports have surfaced that Big Ben is unhappy with the direction of the franchise, especially on the heals of back-to-back frustrating losses (21-18 in Oakland and 55-31 in New England). Roethlisberger and Art Rooney II (in a surprising move of late to do something that made sense) quickly denied those rumors.

However, Rooney II had no comment about a potential departure by the Steeler Face. One report has suggested that the Steeler Face will be following the Arizona Cardinals next year, and thus, reuniting with a team he followed briefly as a child.

"Oh, for crying out loud and moaning in pain?!"-- the Steeler Face said. "That was when they were in St. Louis and . . . never mind."

Another report indicated that Steeler Nation will trade the Steeler Face to Cincinnati (where he currently resides) during the offseason for James Harrison and and a bowl of Skyline chili.

"That's not even possible. You people suck," the Steeler Face muttered before passing out.

Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-71411743157814515042013-10-22T04:07:00.002-07:002013-10-22T04:07:44.444-07:00Shhh . . . Gotham City Rogues take over Steelers and win two in a row: 19-6 in New York against the Jets, and 19-16 at home against the RavensAfter an 0-4 start followed by the Steelers' bye week, the Steeler Face decided to shake things up when Pittsburgh traveled to New York on October 13 to take on the Jets.

"Here we go Rogues, here we go"

Rather than donning his road-white Roethlisberger jersey (as is customary for road games), the Steeler Face decided to sport his "Gotham City Rogues" t-shirt (a rare find from the 2013 Cincinnati Comic Expo). I'm not really sure why I did this, but when your team is 0-4, sometimes you just got to say "f@ck it" and try something different--so I did. For those Steeler fans, who are not Batman fans, the Gotham City Rogues were the football team featured in the most recent Batman film -- The Dark Knight Rises (2012). The film was shot at several locations in Pittsburgh, including Heinz Field with cameo appearances by past and current Steelers (see previous coverage here).

Moreover, I have unofficially retired the only Terrible Towel I ever bought from active service. This Terrible Towel was acquired in 1996 during my first and only visit to Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh where the future Mrs. Steeler Face and I saw the Steelers beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-3. While I've received other Terrible Towels as gifts, this old Towel was the only one I've used for games for the past 17 years -- soaking up a lot of tears, beers and fears through 6 AFC Championship games and 3 Super Bowls. It was waved at Heinz Field in 20110 when the Steelers beat the Cleveland Brownie Elves 28-10 and was in Pittsburgh again at Heinz Field when the Steelers lost to the Chicago Bears 23-40. For some reason it seemed fitting that its first game was at Three Rivers, and its last at Heinz.

At any rate, the new t-shirt and new Terrible Towel weren't the only firsts for the 2013-14 Steelers season as Pittsburgh collected two sacks in a single game, actually forced a turnover (first of the year) -- two in fact -- two whole interceptions, and won its first game, 19-6 over the N.Y. Jets. Granted, the Steelers offensive line still played like crap that day, but hey, you can't change everything in a week.

Steelers beat Ravens 19-16

If the week of firsts against the Jets wasn't surprising enough, the Steelers upset the defending Super Bowl champion (barf) Baltimore Ravens 19-16 in Pittsburgh the following week to improve their record to 2-4.

Todd Haley's offense, which has drawn criticism for its lack of inspiration or effectiveness the past two years, apparently made something known as "an adjustment" when it featured rookie halfback LeVeon Bell in the wildcat formation taking direct snaps.

The Steelers took a 7-0 lead in this game, but had to settle for field goals the rest of the way. Shawn (I am a fantasy football god) Suisham was 4-for-4 on the day, and is now 14-14 on the season, connected on a 42-yarder for the game winner as time expired.

Perhaps, most remarkable is that Pittsburgh's offensive line (despite having someone named "Whimper") had vastly improved in its running blocking and pass protection. Roethlisberger actually had time to "drop back" (something most QBs take for granted). It was probably the best pass protection Big Ben has had since . . . 2004 . . . or when he played for Miami U in college. Roethlisberger was very efficient on the day, completing 17 of 23 pass attempts for 160 yards, a TD, and no interceptions.

LeVeon Bell looked solid again, rushing for 93 yards on 19 carried.

And Troy Polamalu is back in trademark form (just look at this attempt to block a Ravens extra point).

As Pat Johnston of the Michigan Bureau of Steeler Nation proclaimed: "2-4 never felt so good."

Looking ahead

The Steelers now travel out west to take on the Oakland Raiders, but before we start chanting, "here we go Steelers, here we go," let's keep the expectations low and the Iron City flowing.

Yes, at 2-4 the Steelers are just a half-game back of Baltimore and Cleveland (each 3-4), but the Cincinnati Bungles are 5-2, boasting wins over Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and (Boston Sux) New England.

And speaking of (Boston Sux) New England, the J-e-t-s, Jets, Jets, Jets -- a week removed from a 6-19 loss to the 0-4 Steelers in N.Y. -- stunned (Boston Sux) New England 30-27 in OT.Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-15989032082609463532013-09-30T00:31:00.002-07:002013-09-30T00:31:57.749-07:00London falling . . . Steelers 0-4 for first time . . . since before I was bornThe good news is that Le'Veon Bell made an impact in his first regular season start for the Pittsburgh Steelers with 2 TDs -- for my fantasy team. Big Ben completed 36 of 51 passes for 383 yards and the Steeler offense scored 27 points.

While the Steelers outscored the Chicago Bears 23-16, they couldn't outscore themselves as 5 turnovers resulted in three touchdowns and a field goal . . . as the Steelers lost a narrow 23-24 decision to the Steelers. Big Ben's 400+ yard and 2-TD passing performance wasn't enough to overcome his two interceptions and two fumbles; an inept offensive line; the fact that Felix Jones is our (gulp) best option at running back; a defense that can't get off the field on third-and-long; and a woefully failed strategy by Steeler ownership.
While the Steeler Face's mission in Pittsburgh did not result in a Steelers win this week, it promises greater redemption in the weeks to come. Perhaps, the Blues Brothers is still a fitting analogy. While Jake and Elwood are pursued by the overwhelming forces of a psychotic ex-girlfriend, Good Ol' Boys, Illinois Nazis and a legion of police--they still managed to raise the money to save the Catholic orphanage and pay the tax assessor--before they are apprehended and put in prison. Similarly, the Steeler Face's trek to Pittsburgh came under the relentless pressure of Steeler mishaps--and yet he persisted to acquire a Steeler rosary at the Sacred Heart of Jesus store and have it blessed by a priest in Pittsburgh--before being jailed along with the rest of the Steeler Nation "band" in the 2013 NFL season.
The last great memory the Steelers provided came last year when back-up Charlie Batch led Pittsburgh to a shocking victory over the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. Since then, the Steelers dropped 3 of their last 4 to close out the 2012 season, went 0-4 in the pre-season, and now 0-3 to start 2013. That is is 10 losses in 11 games including 7 in a row. The Steelers are showing all the symptoms of a bad football team, and the Steeler Face heard 61,000+ diagnosis for their ailments at Heinz Field on Sunday night--trade Ben, fire Haley . . . and need more vodka.

Here is one I'll go ahead and dismiss: Fire Ben. Please. Big Ben is NOT our problem. While it's easy to focus on the 2 INTs and 2 fumbles -- it's too bad that missed blocks don't show up in the stat column. Ben is getting attacked like Obamacare at a Tea Party convention. "Trade Ben" . . . really?! This is a 2-time Super Bowl champion QB, the franchise leader in passing yards and one of only 36 quarterbacks in NFL history with 30,000+ passing yards. Here is our problem: our offensive line and backs can't defend the pass rush. Period.

Fire Haley? Okay, I might do that one, but to be fair, the Steelers new offensive philosophy is the doing of Art Rooney II, not Haley. After Rooney II told Bruce Arians that he was going to "retire" and before Haley was hired, it was Rooney who said the Steelers needed to get back to a run oriented offense (without having a line that understands blocking concepts, a star running back or a calendar that shows it is not 1975 anymore). It was Rooney II who said that the franchise quarterback, the franchise passing leader (who produced 3 AFC titles and 2 Super Bowl championships in a 6-year period) suddenly needed to "tweak" his game. Why? Was it too effective? Let's be clear, Ben is not a perfect QB, but he is an effective one. He plays a school-yard style game that involves improvisation, broken plays and risk taking--and it has been a hell of a lot more effective than the confused, inept clown show we have suffered through 3 games thus far. By the way, how did things go for Arians in his "retirement"? Well, he was hired last year as offensive coordinator by the Indy Colts, then took over as interim head coach when the regular coach became ill, and with a rookie QB made the playoffs. His efforts earned him the head coaching job in Arizona this year.

Need more vodka? Hell, yes -- especially if upper management doesn't realize IT is the problem. That IT decided a strategy from the top that has failed miserably, and IT is what needs to change ITS approach. The Steelers GM and and ownership have seen a steady erosion of talent at key positions since their last two Super Bowl victories, including the 6th leading rusher in NFL history--Jerome Bettis, Fast-Willie-Parker, Super Bowl MVP WR Hines Ward, Super Bowl MVP WR Santonio Holmes and now have . . . Felix-what's pass blocking-Jones, Jericho-what's my route-Cotchery, and Emmanuel-oh, I have to dive for it-Sanders. Seriously, Emmanuel Sanders stretched out for (and failed to catch, of course) a ball that Mike Wallace would have to run back to get.

But enough of the bad. Six Super Bowl championships is still six Super Bowl championships and that's more than any team or city has in the NFL. 61,000+ fans showed up to cheer on the Steelers at Heinz Field, and who knows how many have voyaged to London this week to watch them take on the Vikings.
There is good in the world, good in Pittsburgh, good in Steeler Nation . . . and good in the Steelers. Even though the Steelers lost, I still enjoyed seeing them play. I enjoyed the atmosphere and fellowship in Pittsburgh. The highlight of my venture was the love of God I felt at the Sacred Heart of Jesus store in Little Italy, Pittsburgh. The sisters were so kind, so welcoming and warmed my heart in a way that words cannot describe; or, at least, I can't find the words to describe it--but their peace remains instilled in my heart.
London is now calling at the top of the dial, and after all this, maybe it will give Steeler Nation a smile. The Steeler Face won't predict a Pittsburgh victory, or loss, but he will pray the rosary, a black-n-gold rosary acquired and blessed in Pittsburgh. He will pray for the sisters at Sacred Heart of Jesus, and thank God for so many blessings.

I apologize for the long hiatus since James "Excessive Awesomeness" Harrison's departure that was covered in a March 9 post. No . . . I'm not still morning THAT . . . I've moved on, but the work life in Cincinnati has been time consuming, and I have neglected my blog like Todd Haley does half the offensive playbook. Well, that hasn't worked out for either of us. Pittsburgh was 0 for the pre-season and is now 0 for the regular season.

Maybe the Steelers need me to get back in the game so they can to. Pittsburgh is calling and I'm answering. The Steeler Face is on a mission from "Gad" to resurrect our beloved black-n-gold.

The Steelers originally acquired Harrison as an undrafted free agent rookie out of Kent State University in 2002. After bouncing around a few years on practice squads, and in the now defunct NFL Europe, Harrison became a center piece of Pittsburgh's linebacking corp and helped the team win two Super Bowls in the 2000s.

Moreover, Harrison's amazing 100-yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired before halftime in Super Bowl XLIII is widely regarded as the greatest single play in Super Bowl history. Not only was it spectacular to watch, it was a game changing play that put the Steelers up 17-7 at halftime, rather than down 10-14 if Arizona had scored. Pittsburgh went on to win Super Bowl XLIII by a score of 27-23.

Harrison was the 2008 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Steelers Team MVP in 2007 and 2008, and a five-time Pro Bowler.

While even most Steeler fans would agree that at age 35 next season Harrison wouldn't merit the salary he was due, no one in the game right now can play that position in the Steelers defensive system better than Harrison. Meaning no disrespect to Jason Worilds, who is Harrison's likely replacement, but Worilds is simply not enough to fill the void Harrison will leave behind.

Furthermore, it seems unfair that Harrison worked so hard to come back from an injury last season to get back to a level of peek performance -- only to be cut at season's end, while another (younger and better paid) Steeler linebacker, LaMarr Woodley was broadly criticized for not being in game form throughout the 2012 season.

Dear James, Steeler Nation will miss you!Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-53946499471086079642013-02-03T20:13:00.003-08:002013-02-04T06:29:14.219-08:00Super Suck: Ravens win game they tried to lose; Steeler Face looks on the bright side of one of the crappiest seasons ever

Steeler fans, you already know the bad news; so let us now consider the silver lining . . .

Baltimore put the first blemish on San Francisco's Super Bowl record, as the 49ers are now 5-1. The Steelers are 6-2 in Super Bowl contests, and no other team in the NFL can claim to be the 6-time Super Bowl Champs! Here we go Steelers, here we go!

Ray Lewis has played his last NFL game.

The Steelers beat the Super Bowl champion Ravens 23-20 in Baltimore with third-string QB Charlie Batch--just to keep things in perspective. This reminds me of San Francisco's remarkable 1984 campaign when they finished 18-1 with a Super Bowl championship. The 49ers lone loss that year was a 20-17 decision in San Francisco to . . . the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mark Malone and his Magnum P.I. mustache. You can watch the end of this class game here . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loR7Z9hehPg.Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-74015238235240876162013-02-02T20:14:00.003-08:002013-02-02T20:24:46.226-08:00Hall of Shame: Bus left parked outside for third straight yearWarren F. Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-81055065220716442092013-01-24T04:31:00.002-08:002013-01-24T04:35:54.381-08:00Top 10 things for Steeler fans to do to forget about Super Bowl XLVIIWhen you think about it, there is no way for Steeler fans to be happy about Super Bowl XLVII -- either the San Francisco Forty Whiners and their hysterical coach Jim Harbaugh are going to tie the Steelers with 6 Super Bowl trophies, or the Baltimore Haters and Ray "Look at Me" Lewis are going to be champions. That's right, a team that our beloved Steelers beat 13-10 with our THIRD STRING QB in BALTIMORE'S HOME STADIUM could win it all.

In that case -- FORGET ABOUT! Here are the Top 10 things for Steeler fans to do to distract themselves from thinking about Super Bowl XLVII . . .

10. If you're fortunate enough to have a job -- go. Go early, go often, stay late, and save money for any and all things Steelers (e.g., that Heath Miller jersey you've always wanted,

or tickets to a game in Pittsburgh next season, or maybe a trip to Canton to see Jerome Bettis--hopefully--inducted into the Hall of Fame).

9. Obsess over whether Jerome Bettis will get into the Hall of Fame this year. The announcement is coming soon. If he is--GREAT--plan your trip. If not, get angry, write letters, protest, etc., etc.

8. Speaking of anger -- there is the NBA. The Steeler Face happens to be an L.A. Lakers fan, and he is VERY shocked, disappointed and ANGRY that the Lakers ownership stood up Phil Jackson for their head coaching job. I now know what Cowboys fans experience with Jerry Jones. Crazy ownership sucks. Anyway, if you're a fan of another NBA team -- enjoy it! I'm sure it is going well.

7. Do you remember your wife and kids? Seriously . . . do you? If you have them, now is a great time to get re-aquainted. If you don't have them, go find some (they can be super-neat-o-fun, and they will definitely keep you busy).
6. College hoops! Although, you'll have to wait a while longer for March Madness--you can start getting excited now, while every team--including your team--is still playing. The Steeler Face follows the Ohio Bobcats, and the Cincinnati Bearcats. Ohio University made the Sweet 16 last year, and University of Cincinnati is a perennial contender . . . woo-hoo!

However, if you don't already have a favorite team, let me suggest the Pittsburgh Penguins (my second favorite) -- they have awesome colors (black-and-gold) and play in the City of Champions -- Pittsburgh.
4. Drinking. The Steeler Face recommends single-malt scotch poured into a glass with a beer back. Repeat as necessary until you can barely remember your name, let alone anything about Suker blowl whatever . . . huh?
1. Combine any two of the above (e.g., "be grateful you're not a Cleveland fan while watching Super Bowl XLIII highlights; or drinking and hockey). However, do NOT, under any circumstance combine #10 and #4 on this list.

At least Tim Tebow could win a playoff game in Denver . . . Peyton Manning can't.

"I'll never be as good as Big Ben . . . I think I'll sulk for a while,
complain about 'protection problems' and take solace in my regular season stats"

Last year, Tebow was a midseason phenomenon, coming off the bench, winning games, leading Denver into the playoffs and passing for a Biblical "316" yards in a stunning overtime upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tebowfever had struck the Mile High City . . .

And then, the young Tebow was dumped by Denver in favor of 36-year old TV commercial actor Peyton Manning, who was recovering from neck surgery. Yet, Denver went into Manningmania without complaint -- at least until today.

Peyton's lackluster postseason history now has another ugly chapter, as Joey Fluke-o and his jolly band of jackasses outplayed Peyton in Denver for a 38-35 upset in double overtime, and advance to the AFC Championship game.

Fluke-o completed 18 of 34 passes for 331 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Manning went 28 of 43 for 290 yards 3 TDs, 2 devastating INTs -- and a lost fumble to boot.

It was all there for Peyton and the Broncos -- the No. 1 seed and home field advantage in the AFC playoffs, and just like it so often happened when Peyton played for the Colts in the postseason--he under-performed when it mattered most. An ill-advised Manning pass was picked-off near midfield towards the end of the first overtime, which set up Baltimore for the game-winning field goal kick.

To be fair, Peyton wasn't the only Bronco to blow it. The biggest blow in this blowfest was the blown coverage on Baltimore's last play in regulation. Trailing 35-28, the Ravens were facing 3rd down from their own 30-yard line with only 31 seconds to go and no time outs (because Fluke-o can't read a play clock) when Rahim Moore inexplicably decided to let Jacoby Jones of the Ravens (who was otherwise double-covered) to get behind him as he made a lame-ass attempt at an interception. Instead, Jones made an all-too-easy catch and walked into the endzone. If Rahim just keeps Jones in front of him and makes the tackle, the game probably ends there.

And no one was more upset than Manning, who did what all great leaders do -- started sulking and obsessing over his misfortune.

Peyton vs. Big Ben:

Do you really want to go there?

A friend of The Face (who shall remain anonymous) had the audacity to suggest earlier this season (the regular season) that Peyton Manning would have won more Super Bowls than Big Ben if he had played with the Steelers.

Peyton v. Big Ben: Head-to-Head

Steeler 21, Colts 18

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts have the No. 1 seed and home field advantage for the AFC playoffs (sound familiar?) and host the 6th-seeded Steelers. Big Ben completes 14 of 24 for 197 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT. Manning is 22 of 28 for 290 yards, 1 TD. Did Manning have better stats? Maybe. But Big Ben made the play -- THE TACKLE -- that ultimately saved the game for Pittsburgh. Did this play show up in the stat column? No. Did it make a difference. Yes.

You won't see Peyton-Whiner making this kind of play

Could you imagine if the roles were reversed in that game and Peyton Manning were QB for the Steelers that day (okay, stop to vomit as that thought first comes to mind). Better now? Okay, imagine that Jerome Bettis fumbles at the goal line and the Colts are running the ball back . . . does Peyton hustle back to make a shoe-string tackle? Or does he just stomp off the field and whine about his misfortune. Exactly.

The rebuttal:

In Super Bowl XL Ben Roethlisberger was 9 of 21 for 123 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs and had the worst passer rating of any QB to win the Super Bowl.

Rebuttal of the rebuttal:

In Super Bowl XL, Big Ben scored a rushing TD; made a huge 3rd down conversion on a broken play (a deep pass to HInes Ward) that set up his rushing TD; threw a critical block on a WR reverse that allowed Antwaan Randle El to throw the game clinching TD; and picked up first downs with his feet to run out the clock.

OH! And what about the three games Big Ben helped the Steelers win on the road (31-17 in Cincinnati, 21-18 in Indianapolis, and 34-17 in Denver) just to get the Steelers to Super Bowl XL . . .

In those three games Big Ben completed 49 of 92 passes for 680 yards, 7 TDs, 1 INT, and another rushing TD.

Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-89279293955352338112012-12-31T06:25:00.003-08:002012-12-31T06:25:40.180-08:00A disgruntled Steeler Fan's Guide to the 2012 NFL PlayoffsThe 2012 Steelers are not in the NFL playoffs, trading places with the likes of the Cincinnati Bengals, who are usually the ones left outside the AFC North bubble. It's a dreary Holiday season for Pittsburgh Steelers fans -- no doubt.

Steeler Nation has had over a week to absorb that reality, analyze the reasons for it, and start looking towards the 2013 draft, offseason personnel moves, and possibly, the Hall of Fame inductions. While Steeler fans won't be hanging on the edge of our seats throughout the postseason, there are a few scenarios Steeler Nation should be concerned about. For instance, no one in Steeler Nation wants to see the 49ers win a 6th Super Bowl, same as the Steelers, or watch Joey Flacco and his magic uni-brow win an AFC Championship, or watch Roger Goodell slobber all over Tom Brady and Bill Billicheat (along with his merry band of cheaters) on the podium in Super Bowl XLVII.

Towards that end, the Steeler Face presents his ranking of the 2012 playoff teams in the AFC and NFC field. In each conference teams are broken into one of two cussable categories: "could live with it" and "could not possibility tolerate it" if this team won the Super Bowl. Within each category teams with the lower number are ranked more favorably for Steeler fans than teams with the higher number. The implications for Steeler fans for each team (if it won the Super Bowl) are also briefly summarized.

AFC SUPER BOWL CUSSABILITY:

"Could live with it"

1. Cincinnati Bengals: It would be their first ever Super Bowl win and would enliven the Bengals/Steelers rivalry into something serious for Steeler fans. We could no longer dismiss them as the Bungles. Moreover, Cincinnati got an unlucky draw (twice) in their other Super Bowl appearances, losing 26-21 and 16-13 to the 49ers. Additionally, the Queen City is now the home city of this Steeler fan--and I have come to be very fond of it.

2. Indianapolis Colts: It is the opinion of this Steeler fan that the Rooney's made a big mistake in announcing the "retirement" of Bruce Arians when they were really "firing" him. That passive aggressive B.S. shouldn't happen in the NFL. Worse yet, this Steeler fan accepted Arians dismissal as getting rid of the cussing bubble-screen -- when in fact, the Rooneys were doubling-down on this small-ball, go-nowhere, do-nothing style of offense. Ugh. Lesson learned for my part--Bruce Arians wasn't the problem. At least, Arians knew that you have to throw the rock down the field often enough to score points, and he had the common sense to involve THE franchise QB into offensive game plan. Arians would be more than vindicated in taking a rookie QB to the Super Bowl after getting "retired" from Pittsburgh. It would also be Arians' second Super Bowl ring as an offensive coordinator.

3. Houston Texans: It would be the first ever Super Bowl for the Texans. While I still have a hard time being excited about any team from Texas, a Houston Super Bowl victory is far better than one for Baltimore or New England.

4. Denver Broncos: The Steeler Face is heavily conflicted about this one. On the one hand, Peyton Manning deserved better in Indianapolis. Would it have killed Andrew Luck to hold a clipboard for a couple of years? No. And for that matter, I wouldn't mind seeing Manning win won with Denver (not to mention the fact that he was one of the funniest athletes to host Saturday Night Live). On the other hand, the Peyton Manning Blowfest that will surely accompany this ride will be hard to stomach. Additionally, it would give Manning the same number of Super Bowl wins as Big Ben -- please pass the Alka Seltzers.

"Could not possibly tolerate it"

5. Baltimore Ravens: Joey Fluke-o, Joey Fluke-o's uni-brow, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Ed Reed, John Harbaugh, the old Brownie Elves . . . need I say more? Barf.

6. New England Patriots: Another Super Bowl win would be the 4th for Tom Brady -- tying him with Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana for most of any NFL quarterback. While I have nothing against Brady personally, I do have a strong distaste for the spy gate fiasco (and lack of punishment) that gave the Patriots (and Brady) at least two championships. In both of those campaigns the Patriots beat the Steelers in the AFC Championship game. Remarkably, I recall post game comments from the humbled Steelers along the lines of -- it was like they [the Patriots] knew what plays we were calling before we ran them. Well, that's because THEY DID. Please, oh please, oh please -- any team but the Patriots.

NFC SUPER BOWL CUSSABILITY:

"Could live with it"

1. Atlanta Falcons: It would be their first Super Bowl championship, and most folks hardly know Atlanta has a team anyway.

2. Seattle Seahawks: It would also be a first Super Bowl title for the former AFC team. As a bonus, NFL Network would likely replay Seattle's other Super Bowl appearance -- a 21-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in XL. On the downside, we'd have to listen to Seattle whine about some of the close calls in the game.

3. Minnesota Vikings: It would be first championship for the Vikings in several tries. The NFL Network would likely replay the Vikings other Super Bowl appearances from the '70s, including their 16-6 loss to the Steelers in IX.

4. Washington Redskins: It would be the 4th Super Bowl championship for the Redskins. Eh . . . . However, I think the team nickname is obnoxious.

"Could not possibly tolerate it"

5. Green Packers: It would be 5th title for Green Bay. Moreover, the wounds from Super Bowl XLV are still too fresh--and the NFL Network would love to show the Steelers' 25-31 loss in that contest on a loop tape. And who wants to see Aaron Rodgers thrust his crotch anymore? Yuck.

6. San Francisco 49ers: A championship this year would make San Fran 6-0 in the Super Bowl, and would tie the Steelers for most all-time. However, a 49ers championship is still preferable to one by the Patriots because San Fran has at least won theirs on merit.

WHAT YOU HOPE WILL HAPPEN, WHAT YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN . . .

So, to re-cap: Cincy, Indy, Houston, Denver, Atlanta, Seattle, Minnesota, and Washington = okay; Baltimore, New England, Green Bay and San Francisco = no way. That is what I hope will happen, now here is what I think . . .

Denver and Manning are on a mission and have home field advantage for the AFC playoffs. Prepare yourselves for the Manning Blowfest extravaganza as Denver wins Super Bowl XLVII over the Green Bay Packers, 31-20. Steeler Fans will no doubt suffer while being caught between the vice of the Manning Blowfest and the NFL Network loop tape of Super Bowl XLV -- barf, barf, barf.

The Steeler Face was 4-5 picking Steeler games this year, and is 14-11 all time (10-5 in the 2011 regular season and 0-1 in the 2011 postseason).
Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-91941341430000481182012-12-30T21:15:00.000-08:002012-12-30T21:15:22.804-08:00Steelers win 2012 finale, face uncertain future in 2013As predicted by the Steeler Face, Pittsburgh won its last game of 2012, beating the Cleveland Brownie Elves 24-10 at Heinz Field. Big Ben tossed 3 touchdown passes, Troy Polamalu recorded an interception, the offense ran the no-huddle, and the defense forced turnovers -- all of the things that would have made a difference in the Steelers' previous three straight losses.

The win evens the Steelers' record at 8-8 and concludes the most disappointing season in recent memory for this fan -- as Pittsburgh was not just one game, but one play from making the playoffs. A wide receiver fumble in week three against the Oakland Raiders, a ridiculous field goal attempt against the Tennessee Titans in week six, a fumble on a punt return in week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys, or a late interception against the Cincinnati Bengals in week 16 -- each were game breaking plays -- and just one more win would have put Pittsburgh in the postseason.

There were some bright spots in 2012. Heath Miller had his best season with 71 catches for 816 yards and 8 touchdowns, Lawrence Timmons collected 6 sacks and 3 interceptions, Shaun Suisham made 28 of 31 field goal attempts, Plaxico Burress made a spectacular touchdown catch at Heinz Field on Sunday and may possibly resurrect his career in Pittsburgh. Better still--love him or hate him--the Steelers have a franchise quarterback in the person of Ben Roethlisberger who managed 26 TDs against 8 INTs and over 3,000 yards passing in an "off season".

And if none of that impresses you--please keep in mind that no team has won more Super Bowls or playoff games (or has better uniforms) than the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That said--the standard is the standard in Steeler Nation--and we are ultimately disappointed with outcome of 2012, and we are all fretting over the uncertainty ahead in 2013 . . .

1. Steelers ownership: I'm more than happy that the Rooneys own and manage the Steelers. They're awesome, and their success is unmatched. No one is perfect though, and even the Rooneys made a big mistake in 2012 by not soliciting buy-in from their franchise player on ownership's decision to try and make Pittsburgh a run-first team with a small-ball approach in the passing game. It backfired. Admit it. Big Ben has more than stepped-up and took blame for the poor decisions he made on the field (ahem, by the way, 26 TDs and only 8 INTs in 13 games). He's not perfect either, and he said so. Moreover, if you let him, Ben will take the blame for the whole season, but in fairness (and reality) he shouldn't and isn't. He is the franchise player of this team, and love him or hate him, THIS TEAM WILL NOT WIN WITHOUT HIM.

2. Coaching: Mike Tomlin is a good coach. I'm glad he coaches the Steelers. He took Pittsburgh to two Super Bowls in a three-year time span. In six years as the Steelers coach he hasn't had a loosing record, but still, he's not perfect either. Tomlin's inability to call a timeout is well documented, and this year his inability to call for a 2-point conversion attempt, make in-game adjustments, or take control over situational play calling were especially noticed. The Steelers lost 5 games by exactly 3 points--two of those games to the riff-raff Raiders and Titans and two other games to division rivals, Ravens and Bengals. Is Todd Haley to blame for the uninspired and abysmal play calling throughout the season? Yes. Could Tomlin have ordered a change of approach? Yes. Remember the Ray Sherman disaster in 1998? In his first and only season as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator -- then Head Coach Bill Cowher took over the play calling duties.

3. Defense: "Say what?!" you say. Sorry, but I've seen this paper champion defense get shredded on too many 3rd-and-long and 4th-and-ridiculous situations this year and last. I love Dick LeBeau, and I hope he is Pittsburgh's DC next year. However, if we're going to stick with the 3-4 we need to get the personnel who can carry it out.

4. Offense: Will Todd Haley adapt the most boring and predictable offense ever? Will he get a head coaching job in Arizona? I'm hopeful for the latter. Mike Wallace will be gone, but Plaxico Burress could make for a nice (and much less expensive) replacement. Rashard Fumblehall is gone too, but Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer are not premier backs. Would the Steelers please go after Steven Jackson of the St. Louis Rams, who will become a free agent? I love Byron Leftwich and Charlie Batch, but these guys are unable to stay healthy as backups. Moreover, it is time for the Steelers to start grooming a young number 2 behind Big Ben.

5. Special teams: Can we find a punter who can kick the ball farther than 30 yards?

6. Will Jerome Bettis be elected to the Hall of Fame?Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2748118024811407565.post-16518098903311681962012-12-23T23:10:00.003-08:002012-12-23T23:10:53.713-08:00Steelers lose, miss playoffs . . . time for ownership to own-upBig Ben did not have a good game. For the second time in as many weeks an ill-advised Roethlisberger pass attempt was intercepted to set up the game-winning field goal for the opponent. Ben's errant throw with only 14 ticks left on the clock gift wrapped the AFC's final Wild Card spot for the Bengals (9-6) in a 13-10 loss for Pittsburgh (7-8).

What a fall for Roethlisberger and the Steelers. Through nine games Pittsburgh was 6-3 while riding a four game win streak. Big Ben was having one of his best seasons ever throwing 17 touchdowns against only 4 interceptions -- there was even talk about Roethlisberger as an MVP candidate -- League MVP.

And then came that horrible Monday game against the Kansas City "Chefs" that knocked Ben out for three games with a dangerous rib and shoulder injury. Since then the Steelers have dropped 5 of 6 including three in a row after Ben's return (during which time his TD/INT ratio is 6 to 4).

While many (and especially the Big Ben haters) will lay the blame for the the Steelers' downfall in the game and for the season only on Roethlisberger -- this is simple minded and wrong.

Ownership, management and coaching are all to blame too. Big Ben's game is making plays with his feet and throwing the ball down field. The offense has thrived in the no-huddle and Roethliserger's cut-loose, gunslinging, schoolyard style of play yielded two Super Bowl championships, three AFC titles and four AFC championship game appearances in a seven year span from 2004-2010. And in 2011 Pittsburgh posted a 12-4 record.

But ownership decided to change things (ostensibly, and not necessarily unreasonably) to try and preserve Ben's career. Ownership wanted a more run-oriented offense and wanted Ben to take less sacks by hurrying throws or throwing the ball away, rather than extending plays with his feet. To facilitate this new approach Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians was fired (ahem, I mean "retired" before he "unretired" and took the same position at Indianapolis, before he became the interim Head Coach while leading the Colts into the playoffs with a rookie QB).

And, the Todd Haley offense was ushered in -- the most devastatingly predictable offense ever. First-and-run-stuffed-at-the-line, second-and-run-stuffed-at-the-line, third-and-obvious-pass-attempt-sacked. Worse yet, Coach Tomlin never demanded any adjustment--even in today's game with the season on the online and the Steelers needing only one more precious score to win the game.

For the game, and for the season, the running game was not there. The only chance Pittsburgh had to win the game today was to open up the offense and throw the ball down field. The Steelers did that once--only once--against Cincinnati even though it produced the game's only offensive touchdown. Trailing 10-0 with a minute to go before halftime Pittsburgh went no-huddle and it took Big Ben only two pass plays to get a touchdown!

And then, inexplicably, the no huddle was abandoned in the second half when the Steeler defense forced turnovers setting up the offense at midfield. It's wasn't Big Ben calling the first-and-run, second-and-run, third-and-obvious -- that's the offensive coordinator -- that's coaching -- and it SUCKED. Oh, and for this style keeping Ben from getting sacked -- he was sacked 6 times today before I stopped counting.

Again, anyone can blame it all on Ben. He's already apologized--and today--took all the blame on himself; but he's not the only one that needs to apologize. If ownership, management and coaching lays this all on Ben it will be toxic for the Steelers. There is plenty of blame to go around. And it needs to go around if the Steeler ship is going to be righted for 2013:

-- Ownership and management need to embrace the strengths of its franchise QB, and not try to make him (and his team) into something it isn't. Big Ben doesn't care to extend his career another five-to-seven years if those years are mediocre 7-9 seasons. He'd rather play all-out for the next three years and maybe win another championship in the process. Let him do it.

-- Coach Tomlin needs to stop cheerleading and start coaching. Learn to call a timeout, call for a two-point conversion even when the game looks "bleak", and drill your players about TWO HANDS ON THE FOOTBALL.

-- And together, ownership, management and Coach Tomlin need rethink its offensive coordinator. Hopefully, the rumors that Haley will go to Arizona to be its new Head Coach are true. Let him go. Maybe we can get Whisenhunt back. Or, maybe the Steeler ownership and management should let their franchise QB have some say in his play caller. If Haley is staying, then for crying out loud, let's run what the Cardinals did in 2008-09 when they went to the Super Bowl.

-- Bottom line: The Rooney's approach to go run-oriented and keep Ben from being Ben backfired -- woefully. Ben has owned up to his shortcomings this year, now it is time for the Art Rooney II, Mike Tomlin and Todd Haley to do the same.

Other parting shots . . .

A big wave-of-the-Terrible Towel to the Steeler defense today -- two interceptions, a fumble recovery and six sacks! I never heard so much Renegade this season as I did today -- there was even a "air towel" tribute.

Congratulations to the Cincinnati Bengals -- you'll be the team this disgusted Steeler fan will be pulling for this postseason. A full Steelers guide to the 2012-13 postseason will be forthcoming.

The Steeler Face was 3-5 in game forecasts for the season, 10-5 last year, 0-1 playoffs, and 13-11 all time (not that any of that matters). However, I hereby predict that the Steelers will beat the Browns next week. Why? Just because it will piss us all off even more that they didn't win today.

I heard my wife say, "I'm impressed" as I hobbled down the stairs on crutches and my foot in a walking cast.

"Who are you impressed with?" I asked, careful not to fall and break my neck as I negotiated the narrow turn of our stair case.

"With all of you," she said. "When I woke you three up at 9 and said you had to be ready to go to mass by 9:45 -- I thought you'd never make it." You see, when my wife came down stairs at 9 this morning (already ready to face the day) she found myself and my two sons sprawled out on our large sectional where we had crashed the night before. And, in 45 minutes time we had to be cleaned, dressed and presentable for mass (not to mention that one of us is still recovering from surgery to repair a torn achilles).

Yet, somehow, the three us managed to pull it off--untouched by the disappointment of failing to meet expectations--and thus, from henceforth let this day -- December 23rd -- be known as the Feast of the Immaculate Impression . . . as well as the Feast of the Immaculate Reception, of course.

How interesting that this blessed event in the Steeler Face Family occurred on the day of the 40th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. Maybe this is a sign of things to come today . . .
However, the Steeler Face's magic cussball sees a different story inside the numbers.

Although, the Steelers' paper champion defense is high in the NFL rankings, it has allowed 4th quarter leads to evaporate as its DBs regularly give 20 yard cushions to wideouts, while its aging linebackers are chasing after speedy youngsters in the slot.

Meanwhile, the Rooney's are insisting on a run-oriented approach on offense that features the three-headed underachieving trio of Jonathan Dwyer, Isaac Redman, and Rashard Fumblehall. While the offensive line has managed pass blocking this year, it hasn't been as effective opening up holes for the running game. Or maybe, the running game has suffered because the Steelers have failed to install something called a "fullback" to help open up those holes. Worse yet, the Steelers' improved pass blocking this season will be challenged by the Bengals, who lead the league in sacks this year with 43.

While Big Ben is putting together a solid statistical season (22 TDs against 6 INTs in 11 games), Heeeeath Miller is catching everything thrown in his area code and Shaun Suisham has kicked 26 of 27 field goal attempts -- this offense has become listless at times. Moreover, no matter how many times I read reports that Mike Tomlin and Todd Haley say Big Ben's recent criticism of the play calling was just "emotional" or spoken out of "frustration" or that they are not "fazed" by it -- I'm not buying it. I think Big Ben sees the same thing that Steeler Face has been bitching about all year -- the farting around with all the bullshit bubble screens.

Moreover, Ben has to have noticed that Bruce Arians, who was essentially fired by the Steelers as OC, has done extraordinarily well as interim HC at Indianapolis where the Colts are going to the playoffs with a better record than the Steelers -- and a rookie QB.

Tomlin should stop all of his hollow cheerleading and actually produce a game plan for beating Cincy and drilling his team on the fundamentals -- TWO HANDS ON THE FOOTBALL!

The bottom line is that this 2012 squad is just not a good team, and is in the midst of its worst slide of the season losing 4 of its last 5 games. Worse yet, the Steelers have lost games to many of the NFL's bottom feeders, including Oakland, San Diego, and Cleveland.

Meanwhile, Cincy is hot, winning 5 of its last 6. This is a good Bengals team right now -- and they absolutely hate the Steelers. This is their moment and the Bengals will prove it on Sunday.

Who day say gonna beat 'dem Benglas? We (not) day.

I've shaken the magic cussball several times this week and the answer I keep getting is -- frustrating frequent fumbles, no fullback for run formations, getting stuffed at the line on 3rd and short, receivers not catching the ball, poor clock management, and bubble screen, bubble screen drops and fumbles, secondary burned, coaching trouble. Steelers blow up big time, the Steeler Face forecasts a 45-24 win for the Bengals.

Too bad that Sunday's game will be the 40th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception. It will at least take some divine intervention for Steelers to pull this one off.Steeler Facehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00468608538711252874noreply@blogger.com0
